Early work

A colorful abstract portrait of a man with dark hair, wearing a dark shirt, painted in an impressionistic style with bold brushstrokes and a vibrant palette.

Self-portrait, 1988, Oil on canvas, 16” x 20”

I studied painting and other studio arts in the 1980s—at Middlebury College, and then at the New York Studio School of Painting, Drawing, and Sculpture. At that time, I focused mainly on the human figure. But after several years of struggling to paint while working full time, I mostly abandoned the pursuit until starting again in 2021.

Here is some of the work from the 1980s and early ‘90s.
